Sex Trafficking

There are many widely recognized indicators of possible sex trafficking or commercial sexual exploitation. One sign alone doesn’t prove trafficking — but patterns and multiple indicators together are serious red flags.

Organizations such as Polaris Project and the National Human Trafficking Hotline identify the following as common warning signs:

Possible Signs of Sex Trafficking

  • Sudden possession of expensive items
  • New phones, designer clothes, cash, nails/hair done regularly — without a clear source of income.
  • Traffickers often use gifts or “love bombing” to create dependency.
  • Controlling older “boyfriend” or companion
  • Significant age gap.
  • The person speaks for them, monitors them, controls money, or restricts contact with others.
  • This is sometimes called the “Romeo pimp” tactic — building emotional control before exploitation.
  • Frequent hotel stays / constant movement
  • Being dropped off and picked up repeatedly.
  • Not knowing where they are staying.
  • Rotating locations to avoid detection.
  • Online ads offering sexual services
  • Photos posted on classified or escort-style websites.
  • Ads written in third person.
  • Phone numbers reused across multiple profiles.
  • Branding tattoos
  • Names, crowns, barcodes, money symbols, or phrases like “property of…”
  • Tattoos indicating ownership or control.
  • Multiple or controlled cell phones
  • Burner phones.
  • Someone else holds or monitors the phone.
  • Strict rules about who they can call or text.
  • Additional Behavioral Signs
  • Fearful, anxious, or hyper-aware of surroundings
  • Scripted or inconsistent stories
  • Isolation from friends/family
  • Sudden change in behavior, grades, or friend group (especially in minors)
  • Signs of physical abuse

⚠️ Important Context

Any minor (under 18) involved in commercial sex is legally considered a trafficking victim, regardless of whether force or coercion is visible.

Not all sex workers are trafficked — trafficking specifically involves force, fraud, or coercion (or any commercial sex involving a minor).
